This image of a defiant herring gull standing stationary as a wave crashes against it, has won the annual British Wildlife Photography Award.

Along with the prestigious title, photographer Steve Young wins £5,000 for the image – which he captured on the Isles of Scilly.

Judges said they like the way the impressive photo shows a familiar bird – the herring gull is the quintessential ‘seagull’ – in its conventional setting, but with “extraordinary” visual impact.

Competition judge Greg Armfield from WWF said: “This is a unique and striking image. One that captures perfectly the power, chaos and intensity of the ocean as it surrounds the majestic gull.”

Tom Hind, another competition judge from Getty Images, added: “I like the defiance in this shot – the gull’s refusal to be moved in the face of this crashing wave seems to sum up a peculiarly British stoicism! “It’s also a great example of how the commonplace can be transformed in a judicious moment.”

For the first time a book is set to be produced showcasing some of the entries across the award’s 10 categories from marine wildlife and animal behaviour to creepy crawlies and urban wildlife.

There will also be an exhibition with over 90 images, including all winning and commended entries at Hooper’s Gallery, Clerkenwell, London from Thursday 14th October running until 30th October.

Think you can do better? You can get your own photos on canvas printed with Point101 from £29.
