The French word “Giclee” was invented to name the process of fine arts on Iris printers, done through an ink jet printing method from a digital source. This word was mainly taken from the French word “le gicleur” which means “nozzle”. To be more specific the word “glicer” means “to spurt” or “spray” through a nozzle. The word giclee was started by a print maker Jack Duganne in 1991. He was a print maker and used to work in a field for representing any kind of ink jet print which is used as fine arts. Giclee prints are often used in print shops and in galleries as a method for producing canvas prints.

Origin of giclee prints: Before the use of giclee printing, the methods of ink jet technology were used as an alternative option to serigraphy and lithography. Afterward, the word giclee was invented to describe the methods of digital prints used as fine arts. It was first created on the Iris graphics in the early 1990s with the help of continuous ink jet printers. Iris printers were initially used for producing the prepress proofs from the digital files for the job of colour matching. Gradually, giclee printing developed and became very popular among the publishers, artists, galleries and photographers for the fine art reproductions. Finally, in 2001 the GPA (Giclee Printers association) was formed where a clear distinction was made between a high quality giclee print and lower quality ink jet print. As the demand of art buyers purchasing high quality canvas prints have increased, the concept of giclee print became more popular.

Today’s giclee technology: Giclee printing has become a big hit among every photographer and artists. This type of printing is mainly used to make reproductions of the original artworks, photographs and canvas prints. This is more expensive than the old process of lithography which was traditionally used to get such reproductions. To get better results than lithography prints, high end archival inks are used. In this type of printing, there is a dot pattern which is not visible to the naked eyes. And its colors are very bright and fade resistant. Giclee is a technique used on various types of media. For example – canvas, archival adhesive paper, water color paper, etc.

The depth of giclee’s prints and its range of colors are far better than those of lithography prints. It has got a higher resolution than any other print. The secret behind this success is the combination of Archival Paper and Archival Pigment Inks, which makes light fastness for 100 years and can be extended up to 200 years in perfect lighting conditions. Nowadays, whether you’re interested in photography or scrapbooking or creating your own reproductions, you can easily get the art materials in cut sheets available on Internet. This type of print is more popular in today’s world because it provides depth and luminosity which represents the original work better than any other modern printing technique. Because of all these reasons, the concept of giclee printing is very popular among all the professional artists.

We are all getting pretty used to seeing various forms of street art and graffiti, particularly where I live in the east end of london. It has fallen in and out of favour over the past 30 or so years, and, depending on your viewpoint, is either considered an eyesore, a blight on the urban landscape, going hand in hand with street crime and the decay of moral values, or as a valid and valuable art form produced by those who rarely have a voice. Thanks to artists like Banksy, who’s valuable street art is immediately covered by protective plexiglass as soon as it is discovered by the owners of the building he has chosen, street art is very much in vogue and artists can command hefty sums for their canvas’. Many graffiti artists are clearly very talented, and the quality of their work is undeniable, and i think in many peoples eyes there is a clear distinction between this designed and well produced artwork and the less thought out tagging and rather mindless scrawl that often accompanies it. Whatever your view point it is difficult to deny the artistic value of much of this work, like that produced by Remi/Rough, who has been painting for 20 years, and has been asked to paint at the Museum of Modern Art in Santander, Spain. He is a major name on the street art scene and has a show of his latest paintings at the Urban angel Gallery in Shoreditch at the moment. Definitely worth checking out. What are your views on street art?

If you are looking for an ideal gift to give a loved one then a printed canvas may be just what you need. You can upload any photos or pictures of your choice and have them enlarged onto a canvas which would look great hanging on any wall.

There are many special moments in life that we often want to cherish and here are the top five reasons why people choose to capture their special moments.

Weddings – Many couples wish to frame a picture of themselves as bride and groom in order to remember their special day. Canvassing their pictures gives them an opportunity to look back and remember what made them fall in love.

Milestone Birthdays- A child grows so fast and capturing a milestone birthday such as when your child turns one is something a parent can never forget.

Holidays- Holidays are the perfect excuse for taking the camera out and many pictures are often taken whilst on holiday. Having a family photo preserved on canvas whilst on holiday will definitely make you smile.

Family Portraits- Many families choose to get a professional photo taken of themselves at some point of their life so it is now increasingly popular to have it on canvas.

Graduation- Many graduates take photos of their graduation day to mark their achievements and having the one special photo of themselves in their graduation suit is something to be remembered.

As canvas prints are becoming increasingly popular it is no wonder that more and more people are opting to give them as gifts or keep them for sentimental value.

Being an Artist is Easy

We all have an inner artist just waiting to get out. How many times have you wished you could draw ‘just like that’ or envied the work of landscape painters? What about looking at a loved one and wishing you could paint a perfect portrait of them and then realising that you simply don’t have the ability? For those of us that weren’t born with the knowledge of how to blend colours or how to get proportions just right, there is a simple and self-satisfactory way to get your ideas onto canvas.

Simply by taking a photo of your favourite place you can have it printed onto canvas for all to admire. Most of us have at least one photograph that we’re particularly proud of having taken and wish to share with our friends or family but quickly put away when the tell-tale yawns of our friends tell us that they’re just not interested. Have the same photo put onto canvas, however, and the curiosity of those same people are invoked. As well as having a fine conversation piece, you can have something much more personal above your mantelpiece than the generic ‘it came with the frame’ piece of art.

Imagine the look on your loved one’s face when you present them with a full-sized canvas portrait of themselves, making the perfect gift for valentine’s day – or any other day for that matter. Canvases are guaranteed to last longer than the photograph counter-parts as well as adding a touch of class to any home.

How are canvas prints made?

In its simplest sense, a canvas print is a way of displaying a chosen image using canvas as the media for the image to be printed onto. Canvas is a display media more traditionally associated with artists than printers, the first examples of canvas painting date back to the 15th Century and it is still used today.

Canvas printing itself has been around for many decades, we notice it more as it has become a lot more accessible than it used to be, canvas prints can be found in most modern buildings as it offers an affordable and attractive way to display images. Printing on canvas allows us to display an image in a unique and interesting way which may previously have been confined to a simple, two dimensional print.

Generally, the image is sent to a canvas printing company in jpeg format (although other formats are usually acceptable). The image is then closely examined for any imperfections (red-eye being a good example), these imperfections are removed and then the image is cropped to the required size. The cropped image is then printed on to artist grade canvas using large format printers such as the Epson Stylus Pro 9800. Once printed, the canvas is then stretched onto a wooden frame until it becomes taught; the canvas can then be hung as desired.

From Van Gogh to Monet, many of the greatest works of art ever to grace the halls of the great museums, or the walls of the fabulously wealthy, have been produced on canvas. In terms of doing this oneself, there is just one slight drawback – it takes a great deal of talent, training and time to paint on canvas with oils, and for most of us the results are not pretty.

Technology has stepped up to the rescue, with new methods allowing the transfer of pictures taken on your camera to canvas, all printed in high quality colour, effortlessly achieving the look that only a canvas base can provide without any of the effort or mess. And, in common with the classic canvas works of art produced by the old masters, your photographs too can become treasured family heirlooms, or just something fun to put on your wall.

In fact, almost any photograph printed on canvas will result in a work of art, ready to hang on the wall, and a talking point for visitors to your house. The look of canvas, its texture and its association with expensive and exclusive artworks gives your prints an instant appeal, and the fact that you can tell a story about where you took the picture and how you created the print adds a further talking point.

Once you start creating your own prints, if you have a computer with software for image manipulation, you can really become creative with your photographs, creating prints that are anything from wacky avante garde images to classic black and white stills. You might even be able to convince your friends that your print is a real Salvador Dali – although unless you have the bank balance to substantiate this claim they may remain somewhat sceptical.

Moving away from printing your own photographs for display, this technique also represents the best way of printing the work of the great artists and appreciating it in a form as close to the original as you can get without breaking the bank or stealing an original – those sunflowers will look a lot better on a textured canvas base than on a flat piece of cardboard or paper which fades with age. However you look at it, printing on canvas is a versatile and interesting way to personalise the walls of your home.

Say it through canvas

It’s your mother’s, father’s, best friend’s or your dear one’s birthday and it has been very hard to find a gift. The usual suspects such as chocolates, stuff toys and flowers seem too ordinary, you want something more personal. You really want to say that you care and it’s been hard for you to find a way to say it.

Say it through canvas.

Canvas pictures bring the work of art and the tenderness and reality of your affection together. Let the canvas say it all. All you need to have is a picture of you and your loved ones and there it is on canvas depicting the reality of how you feel and care for them.

You can have as many pictures as you like printed on a single canvas and let them be together forever. Get a single picture with all of your feeling written in quotes on a single canvas. Let the canvas be your way. Canvas pictures live longer than the printed pictures so you can sit and enjoy them for a longer time.

Let the canvas hang in your living room and let everyone see the intensity of your togetherness and affection. Colour your life with the colours of canvas.

Let there be love, beauty, life, family, and canvas prints.

Forget the refrigerator door

Life sometimes seems to come at you from out of the darkness, and with so many moments and memories worth cherishing and sharing; photography has fast become a trendy pass-time and hobby in the UK and throughout the world. Yet there always seems to be that one picture, one moment, one cheeky grin or comical pose that means more than a lifetime spent on the refrigerator door.

Canvases are rapidly growing in popularity as a way of preserving those memories for a lifetime. Canvas printing takes your digitalised moments and, using the most advanced printing processes and inkjet based format printers such as the Epson Stylus Pro 9880, applies them directly onto the canvas.

This canvas is made of cotton which is found to be more economical in comparison to linen, it has a mechanical weave creating a consistent texture. The design can either be wrapped in order to continue the image around the edges of the stretcher frame or not, a process described as either full bleed or no bleed. The natural premium quality of the canvas itself brings a professional, durable and finished look of such excellence and accuracy it is almost indescribable. Leaving you with a beautiful piece of artwork and irreplaceable piece of history that re-invites such found memories into a home that far exceeds the realism any snapshot photograph could bring.
