FAQs - File Sizes, Formats & Scanning

What file size should my photos / images be?

This depends on the size of print that you’re looking to purchase. As a general rule, the larger the file size, the sharper the print (assuming you haven’t manipulated the file in Photoshop). Here is a list of recommended file sizes in JPEG format at - highest quality setting - to achieve really good quality results:

Our Canvas Size Approx. File Size in JPEG Pixel Dimensions Equivalent Camera Megapixels
Small 500 KB or more 1280 x 960 1.2
Medium 900 KB or more 1632 x 1224 2.0
Large 1 MB or more 2000 x 1312 2.6
X Large 1.5 MB or more 2240 x 1488 3.3
King Size 2.5 MB or more 2590 x 1920 5.0

What format should I send my images to you in?

The easiest way to get your images printed is to upload them in a JPEG (Highest Quality Setting) format in RGB colour mode. This is the format that the majority of digital cameras save your files in. If you’d rather send them to us uncompressed in a TIFF, you can also do this on our website as long as it is 50MB or below.

You can of course send us PSDs or PDFs via yousendit or by post on a DVD but you can’t upload these formats on our website.

What is the maximum file size that I can upload?

Our web server will allow files up to 50MB before it starts to cause problems. If you want to send us uncompressed files such as tiffs then please use a free service such as yousendit.com to get your files to us or pop them on a DVD and send them to our main address.

Can I send you a conventional lab print to scan and enlarge?

Yes you can. We offer a competitive scanning service (starts at £15) that also includes a basic cleanup of the image - including colour balance, sharpness, dust & scratches and vividness. If your photo requires more work done on it we also offer a retouching service that starts from £30. These prices are subject to change and scanning / retouching discounts are available on multiple images.
